What is a dermatology consultation?

A dermatology consultation is the starting point for comprehensive care of your skin, hair and nails. Our dermatologist performs a detailed clinical assessment, reviews your medical history and proposes a personalised treatment plan. Whether for a specific concern or a preventive check-up, the consultation ensures an accurate diagnosis and ongoing follow-up.

What to expect at your appointment?

During the consultation, the dermatologist thoroughly examines the affected areas and may use dermoscopy or other diagnostic tools. At the end, you will receive a clear treatment plan — including prescriptions, daily care guidelines and follow-up scheduling. We recommend bringing a list of your current medications and any known allergies.

Skin Lesions Assessment

What is a skin lesions assessment?

Skin lesions assessment involves the detailed clinical examination of moles, spots, nodules, cysts or any visible changes on the skin. The goal is to determine the nature of the lesion — benign or potentially malignant — and to define the most appropriate course of action. Timely assessment is essential for the early detection of changes that may require immediate treatment.

When should I request an assessment?

You should consult a dermatologist if you notice a new lesion or one that has changed in size, shape or colour; if it has irregular borders, bleeds spontaneously or causes persistent itching. The ABCDE rule (Asymmetry, Border, Colour, Diameter, Evolution) is a useful reference, but professional assessment is always irreplaceable.

Dermoscopy

What is dermoscopy?

Dermoscopy is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that allows the dermatologist to observe sub-surface skin structures at high magnification using a polarised light device called a dermatoscope. This technology significantly increases the accuracy of diagnosing pigmented lesions and the early detection of melanoma and other skin tumours.

How is the examination performed?

The examination is quick, painless and requires no prior preparation. The physician applies the dermatoscope directly to the skin or with a contact gel and analyses the internal characteristics of the lesion — vascular patterns, pigmentation and structure. In clinics with digital dermoscopy, images are archived for comparison at future visits, enabling long-term monitoring of lesion evolution.

Skin Biopsies

What is a skin biopsy?

A skin biopsy is a minor procedure that involves removing a small sample of skin tissue for laboratory (histopathological) analysis. It is the most accurate method for confirming or ruling out diagnoses such as skin cancer, inflammatory diseases or skin infections. There are several types of biopsy — punch, excisional, incisional or shave — and the type used depends on the location and nature of the lesion.

What happens during and after the procedure?

The procedure is performed in the office under local anaesthesia and takes only a few minutes. After collection, the sample is sent for laboratory analysis and results are typically available within a few days. You may feel mild discomfort at the biopsy site and notice a small temporary scar. Your doctor will provide detailed wound care instructions and arrange for follow-up.

Acne

What is acne?

Acne is one of the most common skin conditions, primarily affecting teenagers but also adults. It occurs when hair follicles become clogged with sebum and dead skin cells, leading to pimples, blackheads, cysts and inflammation. Factors such as hormones, stress, diet and genetic predisposition can influence its onset and severity. Although not a serious condition, it can have a significant impact on self-esteem and quality of life.

How do we treat acne?

Acne treatment is personalised and may include topical creams or gels (with retinoids, benzoyl peroxide or antibiotics), oral antibiotics, hormonal therapy or, in more severe cases, isotretinoin. Regular follow-up is essential to adapt the treatment to the skin's evolution and prevent permanent scarring. The dermatologist will also advise on appropriate hygiene routines and cosmetics for your skin type.

Psoriasis

What is psoriasis?

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin disease of autoimmune origin, characterised by the appearance of red plaques covered with whitish scales, frequently located on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. It is not contagious. It follows a cyclical course with periods of flare-up and remission, influenced by factors such as stress, infections, certain medications and cold weather.

What treatments are available?

Psoriasis treatment aims to control symptoms, reduce inflammation and improve quality of life. It may include emollients and topical corticosteroids, vitamin D analogues, phototherapy (UVB), systemic medications (methotrexate, cyclosporine) or biologic therapies for moderate to severe cases. The dermatologist will assess the degree of skin involvement and impact on your quality of life to recommend the most appropriate option.

Dermatitis

What is dermatitis?

Dermatitis is a general term describing inflammation of the skin, manifesting as redness, itching, scaling and sometimes blisters or discharge. The most common forms are atopic dermatitis (eczema), associated with dry skin and allergies; contact dermatitis, caused by irritants or allergens; and seborrhoeic dermatitis, affecting areas with higher sebum production such as the scalp and face.

How is it diagnosed and treated?

Diagnosis is based on clinical examination and the patient's history. In cases of suspected contact allergy, patch tests may be performed. Treatment includes identifying and eliminating the causative agent, intensive skin moisturisation, topical corticosteroids, calcineurin inhibitors and, in persistent cases, systemic therapy. Ongoing follow-up is essential to prevent recurrence.

Skin Infections

What are skin infections?

Skin infections result from the invasion of the skin by pathogenic agents — bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. Among the most common are impetigo, cellulitis, folliculitis (bacterial), herpes zoster and human papillomavirus (viral), tinea and candidiasis (fungal), and scabies (parasitic). Accurate diagnosis is essential, as treatment differs depending on the causative agent.

How are they treated?

Treatment is directed at the causative agent: antibiotics for bacterial infections, antivirals for viral infections and antifungals for fungal infections. Depending on severity, treatment may be topical or systemic. In some cases, such as HPV (warts) or scabies, specific treatments are used that the dermatologist will prescribe and monitor to ensure complete cure and prevent reinfection.

Skin Cancer

What is skin cancer?

Skin cancer is the most common malignant tumour worldwide. The main types are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma. Chronic and unprotected exposure to ultraviolet radiation (sunlight or tanning beds) is the primary risk factor. Other factors include fair skin, family history and immunosuppression. Early detection is crucial for treatment success and patient survival.

Screening, diagnosis and treatment

Regular screening — especially for people with risk factors — allows suspicious lesions to be detected at an early stage. Diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy and histopathological analysis. Treatment depends on the type and stage of the tumour and may include surgery, cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, radiotherapy or immunotherapy. After treatment, the patient undergoes periodic surveillance consultations to detect recurrence or new tumours.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases

The role of dermatology in STDs

Many sexually transmitted diseases manifest in the skin or mucous membranes, making the dermatologist an essential professional in their diagnosis and treatment. Among the STDs with dermatological expression are syphilis, genital herpes, HPV (condylomata acuminata), lymphogranuloma venereum, molluscum contagiosum and some forms of gonorrhoea. Early diagnosis enables effective treatment and prevents transmission to others.

Confidentiality and care

The consultation is conducted in a confidential and non-judgemental environment. The dermatologist performs the clinical examination and requests the appropriate laboratory tests. Treatment varies depending on the STD identified — it may include antibiotics, antivirals or specific topical treatments. The physician will also advise on preventive measures, regular screening and the importance of notifying sexual partner(s) for joint treatment.

Botox

What is Botox?

Botox (botulinum toxin type A) is one of the most performed aesthetic treatments in the world. Applied in small doses by a specialist dermatologist, it temporarily relaxes the muscles responsible for expression lines — such as forehead lines, crow's feet and frown lines. The result is a more rested and youthful appearance, maintaining the natural expressiveness of the face.

How is the treatment performed?

The procedure is quick — lasting between 15 to 30 minutes — and is performed in the clinic without the need for general anaesthesia. Through precise micro-injections at the target areas, botulinum toxin temporarily blocks the nerve signal that contracts the muscles. Results begin to be visible after 3 to 5 days and reach their peak between 10 and 14 days. Effects typically last between 3 to 6 months, varying according to metabolism and the treated area.

Microneedling

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a minimally invasive aesthetic treatment that uses a device with microneedles to create controlled micro-perforations in the skin. This process stimulates the natural production of collagen and elastin, promoting cell regeneration. It is effective in treating acne scars, fine lines, enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation and skin laxity, progressively and durably improving skin texture and overall tone.

How is it performed and what to expect?

The treatment begins with the application of a topical anaesthetic cream to minimise discomfort. The dermatologist then passes the microneedling device over the skin surface evenly. The session lasts between 30 to 60 minutes. After the procedure, it is normal to feel the skin slightly red and sensitive for 24 to 48 hours. Results become progressively visible over weeks as collagen forms. For optimal results, a protocol of 3 to 6 sessions spaced 4 weeks apart is recommended.
